Apple's magnetic charging and accessory system for iPhone, using a ring of magnets for precise alignment.

What Is MagSafe?

MagSafe is Apple's magnetic charging and accessory system, introduced with the iPhone 12 in 2020. It uses a ring of precisely aligned magnets around the wireless charging coil to snap accessories into perfect position every time.

The system supports chargers, wallets, battery packs, car mounts, and cases that magnetically attach to the back of compatible iPhones. MagSafe chargers deliver up to 25W on iPhone 16 series and 15W on earlier models.

How MagSafe Works

Inside every MagSafe-compatible iPhone is a ring of magnets surrounding the wireless charging coil. When you place a MagSafe charger on the back, the magnets pull it into alignment so the coils overlap perfectly. This eliminates the misalignment problems that plagued older Qi chargers and allows for faster, more efficient power transfer.

The magnet array also includes an NFC chip that communicates with the iPhone to trigger animations (like the wallet attachment animation) and verify accessories are genuine MFi-certified products.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which iPhones have MagSafe?

Every iPhone from iPhone 12 onward has built-in MagSafe magnets. This includes the iPhone 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17 series, as well as their Pro, Pro Max, and Mini variants.

Can I add MagSafe to an Android phone?

Yes. You can attach a magnetic ring adapter to any phone or use a MagSafe-compatible case. This enables magnetic mounts and wallets. If your phone supports wireless charging, it will also charge through MagSafe chargers.

Is MagSafe the same as Qi2?

Not exactly. MagSafe is Apple's proprietary system, while Qi2 is an open standard based on the same magnetic alignment technology. Qi2 chargers work with MagSafe phones and vice versa.

Does MagSafe work through a case?

MagSafe works best through MagSafe-compatible cases that have built-in magnets. Regular cases without magnets will significantly weaken the magnetic connection and may reduce charging speed.

How fast is MagSafe charging?

MagSafe delivers up to 25W on iPhone 16 series, 15W on iPhone 12 through 15 series. Standard Qi charging without MagSafe alignment maxes out at 7.5W on iPhones.
